The Management of High-Level Radioactive Wastes

چکیده

The terms, low-level, mediumor intermediate-level and high-level radioactive wastes are being universally used, implying different concentrations of radionuclides or radioactivity in the waste. These terms originated in the 1950's for operational purposes and generally indicated how the waste was being handled or treated and what was being done with it under the local operating conditions at a particular site rather than precisely defining radioactivity concentrations or contamination. This still holds true today with the defined and/or quantitative divisions between the three categories differing from country to country and even amongst institutions in the same country Refs [1 , 2].

Membrane Assisted Liquid Extraction of Actinides and Remediation of Nuclear Waste: A Review

Membrane assisted liquid extraction(MALE) technologies are gaining an important role as an extraction /separation technique for actinides and are being deployed as a  promising tool for remediation of nuclear waste generated in the reprocessing plant and other radioactive wastes containing a trace level of radionuclides. The present contribution outlines the classification of membrane assisted ...

Clearance Level Discussion on Solid Radioactive Waste

INTRODUCTION In recent days, the words of clearance and clearance level are frequently used in the field of radioactive waste. This note is showing current Japanese situations on this issue and the discussion items. Clearance is defined as: removal of radioactive materials or radioactive objects within authorized practices from any further control by the Regulatory Authority. Clearance level is...

Evaluation of existing treatment techniques and various problems associated with nuclear waste management

This paper deals with the study of radioactive waste generation and their treatment techniques. The wastes that are generated during the front and back end of the nuclear power production are classified are low, intermediate and high level waste. The various existing process for the treatment for the waste like, reprocessing, pyroprocessing, transmutation, and options available for the disposal...

The State of Development of Waste Forms for Mixed Wastes

More than 167,000 m of mixed waste, waste that contains both chemically hazardous and radioactive components, are in the known inventory at DOE sites that formarly produced nuclear defense materials. The inventory contains both mixed low level wastes (MLLW) and mixed transuranic wastes (MTRU). Site cleanup and decommissioning activities during the coming years are expected to nearly double this...

Downblending Contaminated Radioactive Wastes

Dilution is the mixing of radioactive waste with non-radioactive material, whereas downblending is the mixing of high-level radioactive waste with low-level radioactive waste. These processes have been applied predominantly at nuclear sites as part of the decontamination procedures for the disposal of blended wastes in licensed facilities. Proper health and safety assessments should be carried ...
